ALICANTE FUTURA AND MEDITERRANEAN ALGAE PRESENT ‘BIOREMED’, AN EU COFINANCED PROJECT TO CLEAN PORT WATER WITH SEAWEED

Today BIOREMED has been presented at the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, a project co-financed by the European Union and framed in ‘GREENinMED that, through the use of algae, filter and clean the water of the ports, removing pollutants and thus improving its quality. Yago Sierras, CEO of Mediterranean Algae, the Alicante startup dedicated to the cultivation of Mediterranean native algae in onshore facilities, has been in charge of presenting the project.

The event, framed within the Blue Economy Cluster of Alicante Futura, was attended by the councillor for Employment and Development of the City of Alicante, Mari Carmen de España; the head of environment of the Port Authority of Alicante, Javier Jerez; José María Guerras, vice president of the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, Yago Sierras, CEO of Mediterranean Algae and Silvia Antón, marine oceanographer and CSO of Mediterranean Algae.

Mari Carmen de España, highlighted the importance of promoting startup projects “made by Alicante” capable of contributing to the blue economy of the city. For his part, Yago Sierras thanked “the collaboration that both the City Council of Alicante, through Alicante Futura, as the Port Authority of Alicante and the Real Club de Regatas are giving them for the development of this project that they hope, according to preliminary data already handled, is viable and allows the regeneration of the waters of our ports.

Likewise, the conference, which was attended by personalities of the Alicante society related to research and blue economy, has had the presentations of Javier Jerez, head of environment of the Port Authority of Alicante, who spoke about sustainability in the port environment and the importance of innovation, as well as Silvia Anton, marine oceanographer and CSO of Mediterranean Algae, which has explained the use of algae as bioremediating agents.

José María Guerras, Vice President of the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, expressed “the support that the Club will always offer to projects that seek to improve the marine environment, whether in ports or in open waters”.

Through this presentation, Alicante Futura has been able to establish links between entities, companies and people linked to the blue economy of Alicante, which also represents an important milestone in the development and consolidation of this cluster.
